2017 Merck Awards in Health and Medicine for low and middle income countries.


Highlighting a couple of award schemes by Merck company targeted towards students, practitioners and journalists in medical and health fields.

  1. 2017 Hypertension Award

Submission deadline: 30th June 2017

The award, as part of the Merck Capacity Advancement Program, was launched in April 2016 in partnership with African and Asian universities; with the aim of building a platform of hypertension experts across the globe.

Medical students across African and Asian universities can apply under the theme “What the Healthy Heart needs.” Concept paper should include how to improve hypertension awareness, early detection and prevention in their countries and how to encourage their society, scientific community, local authorities, media and relevant stakeholders to ‘think and act’ on hypertension every day.

Winners will be granted a one year postgraduate Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine diploma with the University of South Wales, United Kingdom. They will also be invited to attend the Merck Africa Luminary on 25-25th October 2017 in Cairo, Egypt to receive the award.

  1. UNESCO-Merck Africa Research Summit- MARS 2017 Call for applications

Abstract submission deadline: 30th August 2017

This summit will be held in Mauritius on the 28-29th November 2017 and will provide a unique opportunity for Africa’s young and women scientists to share their research output and findings with the top echelon of scientists from Africa and abroad.

Abstracts are invited from final year African PhD students and young investigators involved in research related to both Cancer especially in Women and/or Vaccines Development. They should primarily be based at African research institutes and Universities, although collaboration within Africa as well as outside is encouraged. All abstracts will be peer reviewed and 100 winners will be eligible for sponsorship.

The organizing committee will also present the “Best Young African Researcher Award” and the “Best African Woman Researcher Award” to recognize the outstanding contribution of African female scientists with aim to promote women in research and advance their contribution to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

  1. Merck more than a mother Media Recognition awards

Application deadline: 31st August 2017

This is an initiative by Merck to raise awareness about the critical role the media can play in breaking the stigma around infertility. It also aims to change the culture of discrimination and abuse of infertile women while educating the public about infertility prevention, management and male infertility. In addition, the campaign aims to encourage men to discuss their infertility condition openly, support their wives through the journey of testing and treatment.

It is open to print, video broadcast, photojournalists and media students whose stories appear in newspapers, websites, blogs and television and that target the public and has prize awards between USD 1000-5000 for the different categories.
